Back in October 2018, we teamed up with a few of the respective Belgium and French Tourism Boards as well as the EuroTunnel, as the WW2 Nation Team hit the road again and headed out to the continent to explore a few of the historical sites connected with Hitler’s Blitzkrieg campaign in the West during the summer of 1940 as we looked to learn more about this turbulent period.
We spent several days walking the ground and visiting various locations on the former battlefields of May-June 1940. This included…
Day One: Gastuche / La Tombe looking at the VC Action of Richard ‘Dick’ Annand + Visiting Fort Eben-Emael to look at the audacious German glider-borne assault which kick-started Hitler’s assault into Western Europe.
Day Two: Dinant and the Battle of the River Meuse – following Rommel and the 5th & 7th Panzer Divisions’ crossings and break-out in this area (12th – 14th May 1940).
Day Three: Bruly-de-Pesche visiting Hitler’s bunker and forward operation Headquarters in the forests of the Ardennes.
Day Four: Guderian’s crossing of the Meuse at Sedan on the 14th May 1940 + the ferocious Battle for the small village of Stonne.
Day Five: The Maginot Line and the story of the fall of the Fortress at Villy La Ferte.
Day Six: The Surrender & signing of the Armistice at Compiegne in June 1940 + The Defence of Cassel.
Day Seven: The Dunkirk Perimeter, the Evacuation (Operation Dynamo) and also the Massacre of the members of 2nd Battalion, the Royal Warwickshire Regiment by the SS at Wormhoudt.
Since then we have been working hard behind the scenes editing and collating everything we filmed, witnessed and photographed along our journey. We were incredibly fortunate not only with the weather – coming back with tans in mid-October – but with the incredible places we visited, guides we spoke with and people we met along the way. We cannot wait to share with you our journey exploring this period of history!
Over the course of the next few weeks here at WW2 Nation, we will be releasing several videos, one from each day of our trip. There will also be various write-ups, photographs and social media content
So we hope you will join us for this journey, as we set out to discover more about Hitler’s Invasion of the West in 1940.
